Woman killed in North Kona crash

A woman was killed in a two-car crash Tuesday morning on Queen Kaahumanu Highway, north of Kaupulehu Drive.

Responding to the 11 a.m. report, Kona Patrol officers arrived at the scene between mile markers 86 and 87 to find a white Subaru traveling northbound on the highway had crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a white Peterbilt semitruck traveling southbound.

The female driver of the Subaru was unresponsive at the scene and taken to Kona Community Hospital where she was pronounced dead. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

Her name is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.

The driver of the semitruck was uninjured.

The highway remained closed as of 1 p.m.
